Moonrise (ii)

Moonrise (ii)

Tried to get some more light for the scene, so I set the shutter speed to 15 seconds. The houses look great, and I got the silhouette from the hills like I wanted, but the moon was smeared out to become a blurry blob of light instead of the sickle curve it was supposed to be.

Time, perhaps, to mention the forthcoming total lunar eclipse on October 28th, with totality around 4am GMT. I hope to be up to capture it. Next total lunar won't be until March 2007, which is an unusually long wait since they usually occur at least once a year (if I can trust the information in my Starry Night stargazer program)

Very nice. I can't wait to see your pictures of the lunar eclipse.

... assuming that I'm awake at the time, of course ;) But I will try.

"No," scolded Yoda. "Do, or do not. There is no try."

Ok then, I'll use the Force ;)

what was the ISO setting on?

ISO was having a cozy time around the 50 mark. I could've gone to 400, but not without getting a great deal of picture noise in the bargain.

Cool attempt, too bad the damn compression messes it all up...

Well, the full size version looks a tad better ;)

okay, i had a similar problem, but a combination of ISO800 and not too long shutter helped.
You could also take the picture a little later, around 4-6 am when the sky is just a bit brighter.

I guess your cam is a little more friendly at high ISO values, but I'll give it a shot next time.
As for the timing, I wanted precisely this combination of moon and streetlights, with the hilltop on the left, so even though the sky would have been brighter, the composition wouldn't be quite the same.
