Lost in translation
Probably one of the most popular mistranslations of subtitles into Norwegian. The line "your father's lightsaber" should have been translated to "din fars lyssabel", but instead it became what you see in the picture, which means "your father's light saber" (i.e. light as in not heavy). This has amused Star Wars fans for years, and probably will for decades or even centuries to come.
Everyone seems excited about the DVD release of the three original movies, which apparently is due next week. Being ever so broke, as always, I'll just have to wait, and in the mean time amuse myself with the bootleg Special Edition DVD's that I got from a friend about a year ago - originally ripped off laserdiscs, for some inexplicable reason tip-toed through Betamax tape and finally digitized for DVD. And it isn't half bad either.
Tonight I've enjoyed a full three-movie Star Wars nostalgy evening at home, watching the original threesome in chronological order. «Return of the Jedi» is still rolling on the sceen, enter the Ewoks in a few minutes. It's fun to remember how it felt when I first saw «Episode IV: A New Hope» in the movie theatre back in '82, I think it was. (Yes, I know it came out in '77. I'm a late bloomer, so what? I love «2001: A Space Odyssey» to bits, but I wasn't even born in '68 when that hit the cinemas.)
Speeder bike ride time. I want one of those!

I was alive in 68 and well remember seeing 2001 in the theater. The music! The effects! State of the art at the time. I still watch it on DVD every few months. This was a must see for Arthur C. Clarke fans. He wrote the short story "Sentinel" that gave rise to the movie. Have you read it? Hollywood tried a sequel, 2010, with Roy Scheider and Hellen Mirren, but it was a flop.

If only «2010: Odyssey Two» had been able to match story with available special effects, it could have been magnificent. I actually saw that one before the original, and they are of two different worlds, filmatically speaking. «2001» stands out as a masterpiece even by today's standards, both in terms of plot and of realism. Clarke co-wrote «2001» in book form with Kubric as they were making and developing the movie, and of course it is a must read. The sequel movie «2010» is of course based (vaguely) on the book by the same name, but the storytelling of the picture suffered sadly before the alleged craving for space action. Now there are two more books, «2061: Odyssey Three» and «3001: Final Odyssey», and I wonder if they ever turn out as films. And if they do, will they be taking on the legacy of «2001» or that of «2010»?
I read «The Sentinel» a few years ago, and it has turned vague in my memort. Time, methinks, for a re-read :)

It's a quick read. A short story only. I watch 2010 now only to see Mirren when she was young.
