Out on a leaf

Not sure if he was gathering courage to jump over to the next leaf, or what. But whatever he was doing, he was taking his time. Which was good, because it was a heckuva job just to hold the camera still for a sharp picture.

You have an excellent eye for detail and composition. I recall you mentioning that you're a fellow Nikon user. Which lense did you use for this pic?

Thank you very much :)
And yes, I have a D40x which I like very much. I was trying out my new Tamron 70-300mm lens at close range. That's 1:2 macro according to specs, or about 3:4 macro when allowing for sensor size vs 35mm film.
Pretty good lens, or at least I think so, so far, especially for being one so cheap that it was actually within my immediate price range ;)
(The secret behind composition is really to take at least several dozen shots of the same thing from all conceivable angles, and then pick the one that came out ok) ;)

great macro capture! i love how the focus is centered on the little snail and everything else around it is soft.
it's probably deciding what to do next, because obviously the leaves he had chosen to dine on are not that palatable ;)

Whatever his plan, lest he decided to dine on the next leaf, the only next move would have to be up, up and up. T'was a long way down, and up, and he was very, very tiny and not very fast on the run. I imagine if he had to be home by seven and in bed by nine, he'd end up getting grounded for at least a week.
Getting the little guy in focus was a challenge. The 300mm was very unforgiving towards even the tiniest camera shake, and the leaf itself was also moving slightly. Flash did no end of no good, so the only way was to crank up the ISO, fire away, and hope :)

PS.... If you have a few dollars/euros/pesos/whatever lying about, I'd like to invite you to read the comments on this entry. Alan is working on the next big release of phlog.net and a few of the members (incl me) are banding together to show him some financial support. Alan funds all of the hosting etc out of his own pocket - we think it is time to give a little back. No pressure - completely optional. Thanks, Derek (OzDJ)
