Culprit found. The Clock capacitor has exploded and had a little cook up. The Capacitor simply holds the time settings when the power lead is disconnected, and as ours is always connected (and gets internet time updates anyway) it's not going to be missed.

Out with the soldering iron, cleaning fluid and the crossed fingers.
