Pasalubongs!

Pasalubongs!

My brother and my sister-in-law just arrived from
their month-long holiday in Europe and brought
me these delicious pasalubongs — Lindt chocolates
from Switzerland and Zbiribizzi rose-scented soap
with built-in loofah! Plus one more thing ...

Wish I have a brother like yours. At home I am the one who travels and brings pasalubongs...

Pasalubong - am i glad this has died out in England now that everyone can go to mainland Europe with cheap airfares. However if someone gave me these gifts i would be well happy.

Giving pasalubongs is a very much entrenched practice here in the Philippines, I'm afraid! And many times, it's carried to the extreme and becomes an obligation instead of a pleasure! Whether you go abroad or even just to the provinces, people generally expect one to bring back pasalubongs! Not just for the family but for friends and even officemates and long-lost relatives as well! One could go broke buying pasalubongs!!! I feel sorry for our OFWs (Overseas Foreign Workers) — when they come home for holiday, the entire barrio expects ... no, demands!!! ... to get pasalubongs!!! But not among my family and friends. We're a lot more practical and don't really expect any. But, undeniably, it's still nice when someone does bring home pasalubong ... because you know they wanted to, not because they have to. :-)

It's even more demanding here - giving "omiyage" is a MUST!

Does "omiyage" mean pasalubong in Japanese? I thought it was only Pinoys who insist on the obligatory pasalubong. I guess it's universal then.
