The "friend" was stealing the shoes. I caught him in the act. He looked up when he heard the shutter click, smiled, then passed out.
Most people like these guys sleep on top of their shoes to protect them. Guess the man was too drunk to get all the way there... The fact he had them off, shows he had some intention of hanging onto them.
This was taken from the West Side Highway, which was closed to traffic due to a collapse. The lower Manhattan end was used as a place to walk or ride a bike on.
I walked it a lot. It was very quiet on the weekend. This was taken on a Sunday. I was quite alone up there.
