H. you're a funny man. I didn't realize it till now. Clever.

This "traveler" was what is known as a "bag lady". She probably lived in a shelter. The bags contain all of her possessions. A lot of those people used the ferry and the terminals as home for a day. The fare was five cents each way. In the morning the people had to leave the shelters. They couldn't get back in until the evening, and had to be there by a certain hour or they'd be locked out, so they would have to sleep in the subway or in a doorway.

Maybe that's the 'freedom' they always talk so eloquently about. But then, no, what they mean is the freedom to buy as much nonsense as we can afford and then get a loan, to buy more...
