The length and breadth of Carriedo Street in Quiapo used to be filled up with stalls upon stalls of cheap goods, most preferred of which are called "ukay-ukay", where one can buy used clothes, accessories, toys, household utensils and tools, and anything else you can think of at the cheapest, bargainable prices. These stalls are all gone now, dismantled by the current Mayor of Manila "The Punisher" Lim. I prefer he concentrated more on punishing wayward cops, law-flouting jeepney drivers, and muggers instead.

Manila is not just a child-UNfriendly city, but there is also a harsh and obvious divide between the haves and the have-nots. There are hardly any playgrounds for the ordinary urban children to play in safely, so they end up playing "dodge-cars" on the busy streets. In the worst case scenarios, the parents or "handlers" themselves push a child onto an oncoming car, so that they can intimidate the hapless driver and extort lots of money, in the expectation that the victim-child will be pitied, rushed to the hospital, and mended.
