Coco and I came upon this tree where fresh flowers
have been laid in memory of Jong, one of the young
residents who had smashed his motorcycle against
this tree and died a few years ago. You can barely
see his name carved on the trunk below the small
rosary that was hung there — the years have blurred
it a bit. But I'm glad his loved ones haven't forgotten
him.

Tom is buying a bag of teeny-tiny shrimps as food for
his pet dragonfish and fresh-water banded snake.
There are like 40-50 shrimpies for just 10-pesos a bag!
It costs more to get to Cartimar (what with the price of
petrol these days) than to buy a bagful.

I was agape at the sight of these freshwater eels
trying to escape from their aquarium — they could
even bring half of their body length above the
water — while Tom described to me how delicious
they are, especially when grilled. Unagi, anyone?
