THE 1st AVIDA-GDC vs MDC DUAL BADMINTON TOURNAMENT - A SMASH HIT

The 1st Avida/GDC – MDC Dual Badminton Tournament was successfully held last November 25, 2006 at the Club Badminton in Pasong Tamo Extension at Makati City. Forty-eight (48) badminton enthusiasts of Avida Land Corp. (Avida), Greenfield Development Corporation (GDC), and Makati Development Corporation (MDC) participated in the tournament which was divided into three categories of four pairs each team: MEN’S DOUBLES, MIXED DOUBLES, and NON-GENDER DOUBLES.

The combined Avida and GDC team won the overall team championship with a slimmest margin of 49 wins against 47 losses due to the strong performance from the MDC team. A fine-looking championship trophy donated by MDC was awarded to the winning team composed of 16 players from Avida and eight players from GDC.

In the MEN’S DOUBLE category, Joefil Jocson and Russel Flores of Avida stamped their class in fashioning out a 4-0 lopsided wins against the top four pairs of MDC. The MDC pair of Marlon Medina and Mikko Martelino wound up at second place after breaking up a three-way tie with a higher quotient.

The tandem of Chary Ortiz and Joefil Jocson handily won the gold in the MIXED DOUBLES category, rolling over the best four pairs whom MDC fielded with a winning score of 4-0. Yuan Penarroyo and Noel Dampil of GDC won the silver as they also bested their MDC counterparts, losing only two sets from four 2-set games.

In the NON-GENDER DOUBLES category, MDC gave a good fight but in the end it was again the Avida pair of Russel Flores and Chary Ortiz who won the gold without losing a set in four games. The duo of Dan Cruzada and Thomas Origenes of MDC garnered second place with a solid performance.

With the success of this tournament and the camaraderie and competitive spirit generated among the participants, there is a growing uproar to schedule the next dual tournament in the first quarter of the coming year.
