Just a few bits that came to mind:
- Ability to post a picture from a URL (use same upload screen, but include options "From file" and "From URL")
- Ability to replace an uploaded picture (example: posted lo-res by phone, want to upload hi-res version later)
- Ability to edit and delete own comments on others' (and own) posts (for when you don't catch those horrible typos befroe it's too ltae)
- Ability to have same post in multiple albums
- Option to make posts private (visible only to self)
- Option to make albums private (even if some of the posts in them are public)
- Option to let post show only in albums or by direct link, not in main blog (checkmark "Do not show in main")
- Private messages between users
(I guess that what we really want is flickr functionality, plus a few twists of our own, but with the same community feel as the old Phlog - which I honestly don't think flickr is able to offer)
Great initiative, Derek. It's just the kind of kick in the butt that Phlog needs :-)

- Ability to set up an "auto-strip" feature that will remove provider tagging of e-mail messages (or disclaimers) at the Phlog end...
- Option to add new albums from the Edit window
- I would prefer it if phlog avoided linking back to all the MySpace/Facebook crap - rather let people create a post footer with that crap in it if they want....

I love all of the above! I have no additional suggestion. The only feedback is that sometimes when I try to log in, I can't - Page Unavailable. I love Phlog as it is... Am I too simple minded?
2008-01-22 00:48:33
@ manicmolly: Nothing wrong with simple :-) One of the best assets of Phlog when I started here was the simplicity, plus the fact that I didn't get drowned in ads wherever I looked.
But I think a few more features could be added without making it less simple to use. And some of the existing features need some tweaking.

- Guest comments: Make guests' email addresses private, i.e. visible only to the phlog owner. Or make this optional, but with private as default.

I hope to do some internationalization again, but my priority right now is simply to get the new version out in English.
I would love to support multiple languages again, but it takes a massive amount of time and effort to get right. So, hopefully, eventually, but not anytime soon :)

Dear Hemaworstje,
The 'freak' you refer to is me, Alan - the person who wrote/owns/runs & pays for your site and bandwidth out of my own pocket. I decided not to allow sites with nudity onto the front page. They are not blocked in any other way - anyone can go directly to your page, but I want to keep the front page 'family friendly'.
If you are unhappy with this, then this probably isn't the community you are looking for. If you would like to discuss further, I am contactable, as always at alan@phlog.net.

Man... have you ever seen Blogsome.com? There's a lot of things I would like to be like there, as CSS editing, front page and post page customization... but still being easy. Well, anyway, you're using Ruby, so SmartyTags might not suit this project, but anyway, some implementation of these might be terrific. I've got a blog in there, if you wanna look.
Also, +1 on internationalization... lots of non-english people visits and uses this site.
Well, I guess more ideas will come as they come to my head... I guess that's how brain works... :P
Greetings!

*Video uploader with some advanced auto-quality control displays and features
2008-04-02 08:53:12
how about a detailed Viewing History capability, like what they have for Multiply. this would track who visits, when, and which entry they've read :) AND a video uploader would be fantastic!
2008-04-03 13:08:07
Is it possible to configurate the visitor-counter?
Now the count every "click". I think its better when they count every visitor 1 time/day.

ive been looking around ALOT recently looking for a photo blogging site (basically exactly like this one) with tight integration of geotagging. planning on buying a new iphone when it comes out and would love to use that feature. perhaps a small map next to each post with the location of the pic, in addition to a larger map with all the pics on it like what google already has (perhaps even a way to quickly differentiate what pics are the newer ones on a map) on the sidebar. havent found this yet on any site. theres always some integration but nothing extensive.

@kate
You can actually already do this. Just add the following to your blog:
<script src="http://phlog.net/syndicate.php?user=alan&format=js&num=5" type="text/javascript"></script:gt;

Oh, and obviously, change 'user=alan' to your login :)
The format of this command _will_ change in a few months, but the functionality will remain (and be improved!)

If there's some place to get some news about the project's advance?
