Looooov the colors - been drawn to these colors lately. Wonder why.
Anyway, let's karaoke now:
God didn't make little green apples
And it don't rain in Indianapolis
in the summertime...

Look like children in a cradle, like eggs in a nest. The purple color reminds me of death, but the green says that there's still much life ahead.

I was inspired by your shoes Jigs! What song are we karaoke-ing? :) Eduardo why does purple remind you of death? Am glad though that the green balances it out.

Coffins are usually purple around here. Which color are they in the Philippines? And during "quaresma" (those 40 days between Carnivals and Holy Week) it was a tradition to cover all the religious images with purple fabric, that was removed to celebrate the ressurrection.

Eduardo:Ah! So interesting. In the Philippines they are not as colorful - they are usually brown black or white. I've seen a gold coffin on display at a funeral home but have never seen one in use.

Thanks rcbrcb!

Purple coffins? Hmm, that's interesting. True, that purple is usually associated with death, especially during Quaresma (which is the 40 days of Lent actually), when purple is the theme color for church vestments, shrouds and such. It may signify death during Lent but in Catholic principles, purple stands for royalty or of high rank. And during Advent, it heralds the arrival of the King.

As for Philippine coffins, our bourgeoisie love ornate ones, with lots of carvings and gold touches here and there. The latest in coffins here ... a fashion victim till the end!!! ... are metallic in colors. Bronze and copper hues are big! Shiny white and black coffins are big, too, but way too expensive. Dolphy's coffin (shown to me by the Funeraria salesman) is to be all white with extravagant gold ornamentation!!! Too too tacky, if I do say so! And he bought it then at a "reasonable" (note quotation marks) price of 100,000 pesos a.bout 13 years ago. So it's easily half a million pesos worth by today

The colors are beautiful together, and the purple makes the apples look very crisp. Makes you want to grab one!

Thank you Jiggs - please help yourself to one ;)

Jigs - why were you looking at coffins?
2005-08-19 03:24:25
I was selecting the one for my father, making sure that his was simple but very dignified, like the man he was. :-)

Tanya, hope you won't mind if we keep talking about coffins in your phlog! It's an interesting subject (and a great idea for a series of pics...hmmmm). Only poor people have purple coffins, because they are cheaper (bad quality wood and purple ordinary fabric, that's all). Brilliant wooden coffins with golden ornamentation are a must around here, too. I never had to buy one because my parents are still alive - but I'll talk to them about their taste, before I make the wrong choice. I plan to be burnt, so all I will need is a plain shoe box.

Not at all Eduardo. My interest is piqued as well. When my own father passed away we initially buried him in a coffin - but some years later we exhumed and cremated him to be transfered to a family "nicho" (am not sure what the translation is). I think we all will be saving space by cremation in the future.

I prefer cremation myself. I dread the idea of lying in a coffin and everyone peering in to see how you look dead! I don't think I'm particularly vain but I don't think there is any make-up artist on this earth who can really make any cadaver look good enough. And I've told my family about this preference for my body's disposal. But I'm wondering whether I should start shopping for a container for my ashes ... an elegant ceramic or marbled or glazed clay piece ... hmm, what color? heavenly blue? angel white maybe, with tiny speckles of pastel colors? or how about oblivion black? ... I even plan to edit an audiovisual presentation of my life to entertain my family and friends during the wake. RJ can select the music score. ;-) ... I'm serious!!!
