jigs..when the chinese supermarket TNT opened at the West Ed Mall..we bought a durian. The lady at the check out chuckled as we purchased it. Got it home & ohhhh the smell. Tossed it into the snow bank & that was the last time we experimented w/ new fruit from TNT. your photos are coaxing me back there....

Even I can't handle the brain-bending bouquet of the durian fruit!!!
But, Harald, didn't the Thai develop a durian variety that doesn't
have the same overpowering odor as the original? And Thailand...
with a wonderful King who has strong agricultural passions and
gives its fruit-growing industry all his support, Thailand's fruits are
amazingly bigger, better (except for the mangos - Philippine mangos
are still the best and sweetest in the world! Right, Sendai? :-D)

right on! our mangoes are still the best :) tried the ones from guimaras? the province's mango orchards produce the best mango variety certified as pest-free by the united states dept of agriculture. that's the reason why it is forbidden to bring mangoes into the island. also, each fruit if wrapped by paper while still hanging on the tree to protect it from pests. try to visit the island during march/april, the season for mango picking. mangoes galore plus nice beaches! it's just a 15-min boat ride from iloilo.
i brought home some durian from bangkok last year. it still had that distinct smell but not as strong as our davao variety.

My friend has his own little orchard right in Guimaras Island.
So when I can't go all the way to Iloilo or Guimaras, he brings
the mangos over to Manila! And, of course, naka-reserve na
sa akin ang isang tiklis!!! Mmmmmmango-a-go-go talaga!!!

I have to take it easy on the mangos, though. Because
mainit siya and if one eats too much of it, one gets
bungang araw or prickly heat!

Sure fruits here are great, I love fruits really a lot, especially the thing they call 'shompoo' here, no idea whats that in english, or german for that matter, tho... If I ever go to the Philippines, you are obliged to treat me to your countries great Mangoes, Jiggs... As for the Durians, i haven't seen or heard of an odorless variety and I would also assume if there is such, it won't taste as good as the smelly original, wich I also like, tho I can't eat a lot of it, without testing the limits of my stomach...

You mean Jigs, not Jiggs? Because I doubt if Jiggs will fly all the way from Texas to treat you to Philippine fruits. teeheehee ;-)
Yes of course, I will treat you to as many varieties of mangos as I can get
a hold of when you go here. But I wonder what "shompoo" is -- what
does it look like? Is it tart or sweet? Is it small or big? I'm curious...

Oh it's chohm-poo or chomphuu or chom pu kao, depending
on what part of Thailand one is from, I suppose. And I know
now what it is...

I want to go to Guimaras now. Too bad I won't be home in time for the season.

jackfruit or nangka and less olfactorily overwhelming
than the durian)! And, of course, bananas! You likee, Sendai?
